Question: I am a certified home health aide, i took the class and signed a contract w/ a co. for 6mos. i have not been working w/ them recently, and they have not given me my certificate, is there an agency or somewhere i can get my certificate, like a state agency perhaps? Since i am certified i have to be able to get my certificate from somewhere correct? thanks for any help. ” – by ” BH
Answer: Um, BH: Not to be difficult, but it would help to know what state you’re trying to be certified in. Generally speaking, though, most states approve the educational programs that are permitted to award home health aide “certificates”, but do not actually regulate or track the certificates themselves. In other words – I have a school, and I want to market my “Home Health Aide Certification” program. The state has a long list of requirements about how long the program has to be, and what the curriculum must include, and what qualifications the teachers must have, etc. I apply to the state, and they send an inspector and the inspector concludes that my program meets all the state requirements. Based on that review, the state authorizes me to award “Certificates” to my graduates. However – the state, itself, does not get involved in awarding certificates, nor does it even keep a registry of who may have earned a certificate. State laws generally require that any home health program maintain records – including a list of students who have earned the certificate. Because the certificate was offered strictly through the school, you will have to turn to them to get a copy of your certificate – there is no other agency that would have a record of your completion of the program. If your school is refusing to provide you with a copy of your certificate, then you should turn to the state Department of Health to file a complaint. I apologize if your state does things differently – but since you didn’t identify the state, I can only speak generally about the most typical circumstances. Good luck to you.

Question: I came along a ad that said a free transitional class for a Cna so i call and she said if i am a CNA i can take that class to change into a Home Health Aide. I cant understand because i thought a cna is higher thatn a home health aide can someone help me understand. Thank You ” – by ” jena m
Answer: The home health aide class is basically so the CNA can learn how to help elderly, convalescent, or disabled persons live in their own homes instead of in a health care facility. There is also a restorative aide program for CNA’s to assist therapy departments in long term care facilities, acute care facilities, and to carry out rehabilitative plans of care in the client’s home. Then last but not least there is the certified medication aide that class allows the CNA student to pass medications and treatments to long term care residents. I would personally take it if it’s free, normally you get higher pay for having the additional certification.

Question: She is NOT demented and already has a home health aide to help give her a bath, help her get to the toilet, etc. However, she needs someone to help her pay bills, buy groceries and take her to the doctor. I used the word “personal assistant” but is there another term/word for the occupation that I described?? Also, how do I go about looking for a personal assistant. ” – by ” Rudolph’s Owner
Answer: The home health care workers via county welfare offices do all of those things. So if she has medicaid she could see if she is eligible for a home health care worker through them. If her care worker is already through them then she needs to contact welfare and ask that the duties be extended to include all of the help she needs. If she is incapable of managing her benefits then you can file to be her payee with social security. You would need to set up an account (Your name) for (her name) OR (Your name) on behalf of (her name) to show that it is HER account but only you have access to it. And then you can have all of her bills sent to you for payment or you can set everything up to be automatically deducted from her account. You can file to be her payee at YOUR nearest social security office. Hours 9am-3pm and effective Jan 1st they will close to the public every Wednesday afternoon.

Answer: Medicare covers some post-op or rehabilitation period of in home care for a limited period, according to the Medicare and You book for 2011. They do not cover home health aides unless the patient is in recovery at home for a short time. If the patient is low income they may qualify for their state In Home Support Services if their state offers such a program at all, based on patient’s income and need. Question: I want to become a endoscopy/gi technician but want to get some experience on my resume. I was thinking about doing medical assistant on the United States Career Institute online and working as a home health aide first since the economy is down. Any opinions? Thanks ” – by ” Anthony
Answer: I have mixed feelings about MA programs because of telephone calls I have received from upset MA’s who thought they could work in long-term facilities. Since it is not a licensed profession, like LPN’s, MA’s are limited in the setting they can work in, which is typically the clinic setting. I had a MA tell me how much she spent on her training, and it was over a year long. She said if she knew the job market, she would have just went to LPN school in a 12 month program. Nursing homes federally certified by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid can hire a nurse aide without any experience or training, however, within four months the nurse aide has to have become “Certified” as a CNA. So even if you became a MA, you would still have to go through CNA training in the nursing home. Not all nursing homes offer CNA training, and some people pay for it at vocational schools. However, if perhaps you went to a 9-15 month LPN school, you would be a licensed nurse and could work in various settings. Some nurses have said LPN jobs are hard to find, and some say it depends on the state you reside in. In my state, LPN positions are plentiful in nursing homes and clinics. If you wanted to work in a home health agency, most states do not require home health aides to have any sort of special certification. You would receive on the job training. http://www.bls.gov/oes/current/oes311011.htm You have some different options!
